Whitburn Academy Reading Challenge Launched

Whitburn Academy pupils are being encouraged to read more, discover new interests and earn rewards through the launch of the new Whitburn Academy Reading Challenge.

10 September
Reading Challenge 2026/27

Open to all year groups, the challenge aims to promote reading for pleasure while encouraging pupils to explore a wide range of books and genres. Whether pupils enjoy fantasy, sport, mystery, manga, science, history or non-fiction, there is something for everyone to enjoy.

Participants can collect a Reading Challenge Booklet and Reading Log from the school library before choosing a book to read and completing one of the challenge activities.

As pupils progress through the challenge, they can work towards three levels of achievement:

  •  Silver Award
  •  Ruby Award
  •  Gold Award

In addition, pupils will receive a Participation Point for every award achieved, recognising their commitment and effort throughout the challenge.

Mrs Skinner, School Librarian, said:

"The Reading Challenge is a fantastic opportunity for pupils to discover new authors, explore different genres and develop a lifelong love of reading. We hope that as many pupils as possible will get involved, challenge themselves and enjoy the rewards that come with reading."

The challenge forms part of Whitburn Academy's ongoing commitment to promoting literacy, reading for pleasure and wider achievement across the school community.
